A review of Pulse Radio Ltd by Lucy written on Tuesday 5th of May 2009
I went to pulse for my birthday last year, and unfortunately was completely disappointed. I'm sad to say it was undoubtedly the worst vegan food I've ever eaten. The menu is really appetizing, with interesting options, but poorly realised. I don't know if this is true but it just really seemed like they didn't know anything about vegan food other than it could make them money. For example, my boyfriend ordered a tomato, basil and mozzarella salad, which had a 'vegan option'. Well... he received a plate with a sliced tomato on it, with some basil. Their idea of a vegan option was to remove the cheese. Not exactly creative, and my boyfriend paid £4 for a sliced tomato. The vegetarian sausages were awful, very very dry and crunchy. I couldn't eat them. It makes me wonder whether the people running the place even know what their food tastes like. I'm sure they would do something about it if they knew. The thing is, they're not cooking specialist food, just basic, sausage and mash, sweet potato curry, wraps, burgers etc. And if you're not doing anything special you have to do it well.
I understand what the manager has said, but the food really _is_ expensive considering it's awful. You can get much better food from packets downstairs in Rainbow.
I have been to Pulse six times now. I keep giving it a "second" chance because there's little to choose from in Norwich and all credit to pulse, their menu is well conceived and tempting, but as I said, it does not deliver.
I have also had problems with the service. Twice I have received my burger/enchilada with cheese on despite telling the waitress that both of us were vegan and asking specifically for the vegan option. It's very embarrassing, and you'd think someone running a 'vegan friendly' restaurant would ensure their staff were sensitive to this stuff.
I also take the manager's point about it being a busy, lively place, which is fine, but the staff have to know how to deal with it. I went there on my birthday and the waitress was so stressed she was unfriendly and repeatedly rude to my family and I, and so frantic she kept knocking things over, including our wine. She was dismissive and derisive, and I went there for lunch with some friends and it was the same. I have never had anything other than bad experiences at that place. Unfortunately I don't think it deserves yet another chance.
