A review of Hethersett Social Club by Colin Bird written on Tuesday 29th of March 2011
Having lived in the 'village' for 10 years, although it is officially a town now, the Social Club has become such a disappointment. It is run by an age old committee that are have zero foresight in keeping the club alive. New committee members come and go as they seem to be ousted out by the obstructive and archaic people that have been ruling the roost since 1914.
You drive thru Hethersett on a Friday or Saturday evening, where you see the local pubs (Kings Head and Queens Head) buzzing, and then you drive past the Social Club and see 3 cars parked outside (2 of those are probably bar staff). Serving drinks at almost £1 a pint less than the pubs, but having hardly any visitors in should make the committee wonder, but it doesn't.
I haven't renewed my membership this year as they got rid of Sky Sports, and I also had a frosty encounter when I went in for the first time since Christmas, and was refused a drink as I hadn't renewed my membership (although I said I would on my next visti). Not good customer relations, but not suprising. Shame! So much potential that will never be fulfilled.
Unfortunately, I will have to go there now and again, for parties, as I don't have to be a member, and don't have to go back until the next party.
Sadly, I play snooker every few months and would rather play at Sprowston (8 miles away) rather than at the Social Club. So So sad, but the members seem to be happy with the way it is, or they would do something about it (like ... as it is a members club ruled by a committee, they could have a vote of no confidence and get a new committee in, but no-one has the guts to do this ... they will regret it when it finally closes in the not too distant future)..
